Maynard's
interest in woodturning began around 1990. Watching various craftsmen
give demonstrations at wood shows inspired him to buy the tools
and begin! Wood that was destined for the fireplace, or doomed to
decay in a woodlot started turning into bowls. Parts of trees that
once may have housed a special tree house or a swing turned into
"gift bowls."
Burls (growths on the side of trees) have a special
interest to Maynard since there are no "growth rings"
and each burl develops its own design. A clear, non-toxic finish
completes the turning, allowing each piece of wood to display its
own inner beauty. Maynard
enjoys working out of his workshop in St. Jacobs, ON.
